Introduction:
Hispanic Heritage Month was declared a month celebrating the accomplishments and importance of people of Hispanic heritage to America. However, the term Hispanic has negative connotation because it refers to Spanish colonialism. Also, the term Hispanic seldom covers Black and Afro Hispanic people, so that is why the term Latino is used. Latino covers both Black and Afro Latinos as well as people from countries that are not only Spanish-speaking, which is what Hispanic refers to, but all of Latin America. This includes countries such as Brazil as well. More recently, this month is called Hispanic/Latinx Heritage month to account for LGBTQ+ members that belong to this group because Latino is a masculine term even though it covers all genders. Still, there has been backlash against the use of the word “Latinx” because it is an Anglicized form of Latino and Latina, and can be seen as disrespectful to Latin American culture and the language itself by distracting from the real issues. The style guide for the Culture Talk website prefers using the word Latinx to cover people from all different races and genders.
